Cooking a Christmas feast can be hectic enough when you are doing it for just the family, but recently a small group of Year 10 students put their culinary skills to the test for a guest list of more than 35.
The seven students of Diamond Valley College, Eltham High School and Montmorency Secondary School hosted the Christmas in July lunch for Evolve and Typo Station supporters from Shepparton, Tatura and Wangaratta.
Lead by chef Kate Doherty, the students had their first vocational experience in hospitality where they were involved in the preparation, cooking, presentation and overall service delivery of the traditional three-course Christmas lunch.
Guests included supporters from a range of Greater Shepparton businesses, as well as the Goulburn Valley United Way Community Fund, the Shepparton Central Rotary Club and Tatura Lions Club.
Evolve at Typo Station is an independent not-for-profit initiative working with young people who are experiencing difficulties at home or school.
The Typo Station farm is at Cheshunt where participants are involved in a number of alternative, leadership and educational programs.
Evolve marketing and development manager Sasha Molodtsov said a highlight of the July 19 lunch was when students led guests in Evolve's inaugural Masterchef Christmas Cookie Challenge, awarding prizes to the top three most creatively-decorated cookies.
``Students had a wonderful time learning about hospitality management and are very excited about the opportunity to showcase their newly-acquired skills to their family and friends this coming Christmas,'' Sasha said.
