Do your bit to clean up Australia

SNWeekly

Clean Up Australia Day is urging Greater Shepparton residents to register for this year's event and help double the number of registered sites in the local area.

With just more than five weeks to go, it is time to gather family and friends to join the local community in pulling on some gloves to clean up Australia on Sunday, March 7.

``Now is a crucial time for Australians to get behind their local community and do their bit by registering for Clean Up Australia Day 2010; we really need your support to help make this our biggest year yet,'' event founder Ian Kiernan said.

This year there is an even greater reason to participate, with Clean Up Australia Day celebrating its 20th national anniversary.

Twenty years ago Ian launched the event around Australia, urging people to make a difference by cleaning up their local area for a couple of hours.

Since then, his simple idea has evolved to be Australia's largest community-based environmental event.

Last year alone, almost 630 000 volunteers participated and 7000 sites were registered for Clean Up Australia Day.

``Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic, fun event where everyone in the local community can come together and pick up rubbish to conserve the environment,'' Ian said.``Just one piece of rubbish can make a difference and ensure your favourite local beaches and parks stay clean for the future.''

Business Clean Up Day will be held on Tuesday, March 2, while Schools Clean Up Day is on Friday, March 5.
