The talk of the town this past week has been a mixed bag of storm and festival stories.
SheppARTon Festival kicked off last Thursday night with the official launch held at Eastbank, and the storm visited late Sunday afternoon, leaving destruction and debris across town.
Stories of how people and their property fared was the hot topic of conversation during the following days.
After the weather settled down, I headed out on Monday to check on the state of my neighbours and was amazed at how much mess the weather had caused in such a short time.
With all the work ahead for our council boys, Powercor, SES workers and of course all the homeowners, one can't help but reflect on what the people affected by the Haiti earthquake are still going through after the natural disaster that hit in January.
In retrospect, we are so lucky.
For me, what was strange about the whole thing was that while Melbourne was struggling with water and hail damage to businesses, private property and vehicles, I was on a birthday shopping expedition with a girlfriend. Following our lovely shopping experience we headed off to see Cats at Regent Theatre, went to Southbank for a while, then headed to Carlton where we stayed the night.
It wasn't until our return home that we realised the extent of what had hit Melbourne.
At the time, we had thought it unusually easy to grab a taxi, and had noticed quite a few cars covered in autumn leaves _ but just chalked it up to a typical wet Melbourne day.
It seems surreal that we were oblivious to what had actually occurred.
Despite all the weather dramas, many SheppARTon Festival events still went ahead. You can check out our photo spread on pages 12 and 13.
Until next week,
